The iconic Murrabit Country Market will get a $200 000 makeover if The Nationals are elected to government this November.
Member for Murray Plains and Leader of The Nationals Peter Walsh was at the market today with organisers to announce the exciting commitment.
“Murrabit Country Market is a terrific event that is popular with locals tourists and stallholders and I am delighted to pledge our support to help make the site ever better” Mr Walsh said.
“The Murrabit Special Projects Committee has a great vision to lift the appeal of the market precinct with a new visitor centre gift shop and market office and revamped community spaces” Mr Walsh said.
“If The Nationals are elected to government we’ll deliver the grants funding needed to turn this vision into reality and ensure the market continues to go from strength to strength.
“As well as boosting the visual appeal of the town precinct the Committee expect the project will also help generate more income throughout the market and that’s great news for stallholders and for the whole town.”
The Murrabit Country Market is a popular monthly event that attracts up to 200 stallholders and 6000 people each event.
Expanding the existing community retail outlet will mean more space for promoting arts and craft and produce from Murrabit and surrounding local communities and gallery space for visiting exhibitions
The plan also includes a small kitchen and increased space that can be used by community groups on market and non-market days for a variety of activities.
President of the Murrabit Special Projects Committee Narelle O’Donoghue said that the project was ‘˜shovel ready’ with plans and permits already in place.
“We have been raising funds to go towards this project for a number of years” said Mrs O’Donoghue.”All we need is a commitment by government to turn this great project into a reality.”
Mr Walsh said the Murrabit community deserved to be congratulated for developing the plan and for stepping up with their own significant fundraising efforts which have raised nearly $40 000 to date. Almost 1 000 hours of volunteer time has also been committed to bring this project to fruition.
“For the past four years the Andrews Labor Government has focused spending on Melbourne and ignored the rest of the state.
If a Liberal Nationals government is elected in November we will bring investment and opportunity back to regional communities like Murrabit.
“We’re going to deliver a better deal for the people of regional Victoria.”
