The Nationals Member for Murray Plains, Peter Walsh, says the Allan Labor government has deliberately isolated the people who would most benefit from its “alleged motor vehicle registration discount”.
Mr Walsh says the only way to access the rebate is via the Service Vic app or the government website.
He says that immediately impacts those without computers, without internet and without any digital skills.
“And make no mistake, there are a lot of people who fall into that category, particularly our senior citizens – many of whom beat a path to my office door for help every time this duplicitous government offers yet another pittance to try and distract people from the financial ruin it is inflicting on generations of Victorians,” Mr Walsh says.
“Even worse, the Labor government is only offering the rebate for two months, get in quick or get nothing,” he says.
“Again, Labor is making big announcements about doing everything it can to ease the cost of living while going out of its way to make it as difficult as possible for people to access it.
“Which means, once again, it’s going to be the elderly, many living on very limited incomes, who will miss out.”
Mr Walsh says the rebate opens on June 1 and closes on July 31 and offers a 20 per cent rebate on your registration, saving approximately $186 per vehicle – with a maximum claim of two light vehicles per person.
He says eligible vehicles must be registered under a claimant’s name between July 2025 and June this year.
“The full rebate details are still to be released, but I invite any person who does not have access to a computer, or a smartphone app, to come into my office at High Street in Echuca and my staff will assist them to make a claim, just as we did with the power saver bonus, which also targeted those not savvy in the digital space,” Mr Walsh adds.
“If that is too far away, I know from past experience that Neighbourhood Houses, and even some libraries, are also happy to help,” he says.
