Leader of The Nationals and Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh has congratulated three local sporting clubs who have received funding under Round 1 of the VicHealth Active Club Grants Program 2017-18.
“This latest round of funding is aimed at getting more women and girls to take part in sport something we should all actively support and encourage” Mr Walsh said.
The following grants will be used to boost female participation rates by entry into new competitions and conducting new programs and clinics :
- Echuca Cricket Club will establish a new all female cricket team in the 11-14 age competition to increase participation for girls ($3 000)
- Kyabram Little Athletics Centre will increase opportunities for young women to progress in athletics gain confidence and learn good sporting values ($2.251)
- Rochester Bowls Club will increase participation by running barefoot bowls come try bowls and other participation programs to encourage new participants ($2 727)
Research shows that female participation in sport is still lower than male involvement and women and girls can find it hard to reach the recommended 2.5 hours of moderate physical activity each week.
“This is for a number of reasons including a lack of suitable opportunities and difficulty prioritizing physical activity over other commitments like family education and work” Mr Walsh said.
“It is important we continue to open up avenues for more females to get involved in sport.”
