Twin Rivers Primary School Echuca is set to get a new formal school crossing Leader of the Nationals and Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh said today.
Mr Walsh said he had been working with the community to secure a safe crossing since the new school opened in February this year.
“On 23rd February I wrote to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan raising the urgent need for a supervised school crossing to service the new school and together with concerned parents we ran a strong media campaign.
“The Minister has responded with the advice that he is confident that a positive outcome will be achieved imminently” Mr Walsh said.
“This is a good outcome for the school and is a direct result of community proactive action and lobbying.
“As part of the new Parkview Estate residential subdivision in Echuca West the developer is required to provide a pedestrian access across the Northern Highway.
“I have received advice from the Minister that VicRoads and the Shire of Campaspe are working closely with the developer to establish a new crossing point and to upgrade the crossing to a formal school crossing.”
Mr Walsh said a cross section of community members first contacted him about the issue in early February and he congratulated those people for their proactive action and lobbying.
He said he intends to keep the pressure on the Melbourne Labor government until the crossing becomes a reality.
“The important issue now is that it is built before a tragedy occurs.”
