Leader of The Nationals and Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh has encouraged local Year 9 and 10 students to apply for the 2016-17 Premier’s Spirit of ANZAC Prize.
“Following the fantastic support of ANZAC Day commemorative services across the Murray Plains electorate it is timely to encourage local students to make the most of this meaningful opportunity “ Mr Walsh said.
This year students have the option to select from one of two topics one of which focuses on the experiences and impact on women the community and most of all on the expectations and responsibility of young people during the Great War.
“I am sure students could find some inspirational local yarns of courageous and caring women communities and young people who endured enormous hardship but still showed a tenacious fighting spirit “ Mr Walsh said.
The second topic more broadly asks students to research the experiences of the ANZACs during World War One using four primary sources of evidence.
Mr Walsh said the prize is open to all Victorian school students in Year 9 and 10 and that state finalists will travel on an overseas study tour during March/April 2017 school holidays to visit key sites to Australia’s wartime history.
In addition 20 regional finalists will participate in a study tour of significant sites in Canberra including the Australian War Memorial in June/July 2017.
