Local schools across the Murray Plains electorate are encouraged to apply for funding from the 2016 School Shade Grants Program which is now open.
The grants program provides grants of up to $25 000 to Victorian schools to develop shaded areas including the establishment of new shade repair of old shade areas or assistance in creating natural shade through the planting of trees.
Leader of The Nationals and Member for Murray Plains said by creating shaded areas at local schools it would help strengthen and improve sun protection policies even on days of low risk.
“We know that prolonged exposure even at low levels to UV radiation can have negative effects later in life “ Mr Walsh said.
“By establishing shaded areas within our schools for students to play eat lunch or socialise it helps negate the impacts of UV radiation while still building positive relationships between the outdoors and general health and well-being.
“The earlier students can be taught sun smart policies the better “ said Mr Walsh.
Eligible schools are invited to submit an Expression of Interest for a shade grant.
Expressions of Interest close at 5.00pm Thursday 24 March 2016.
