Farmers’ markets will finally get an explanation on the sudden backflip that threatened to shut them down last month.
Leader of The Nationals Peter Walsh pressed the Premier for an explanation in State Parliament today on the evidence-based health advice that had led to the decision.
The Premier couldn’t explain the August 20 backflip, instead saying he would seek a briefing from the Chief Health Officer.
“This confusion, just hours before the busy Saturday morning markets were set to open, left some producers thousands of dollars out of pocket,” Mr Walsh said.
“These farmers’ markets are a lifeline for small producers who aren’t big enough to stock supermarkets and a vital link for consumers to source high-quality, fresh, clean Victorian produce during the coronavirus pandemic.
“The Andrews Labor Government owes Victorians an explanation on what advice led to this decision to blindside stallholders – without consultation – only to backflip hours later.”
Mr Walsh said Daniel Andrews will be held to account on his promise to seek answers.
“History tells us that transparency and accountability aren’t a priority for Daniel Andrews’ Government, but the Liberal Nationals will ensure the Premier is held to account,” Mr Walsh said.
“This sudden decision left the sector in chaos and generated unnecessary uncertainty at an already difficult time.
“We deserve and explanation so we can have confidence this will not happen again.”
