VicHealth Grants Now Open

Tuesday, 31st July 2018

Sporting clubs across the Murray Plains electorate can be supported to create new opportunities to get women, girls and less active people into sport, thanks to VicHealth grant funding now available.

Leader of The Nationals and Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh said the latest round of VicHealth’s Active Club Grants have opened, providing funding to local sporting clubs to create more opportunities for females and social sport options.

Mr Walsh said there are two funding tiers available to apply for an Active Club Grant.

Tier 1:  Up to $3,000 is open to all eligible sporting clubs across Victoria.

Tier 2:  Between $3001 and up to $10,000 for sporting clubs who are able to demonstrate a membership base of over 200, the ability to reach a large number of community members through a program or multiple teams, or experiencing significant demand resulting from population growth.

“This funding program is about making grassroots sports more accessible so everyone can get involved in the sports they love,” Mr Walsh said.

“The aim is to get everyone active and embracing a healthy lifestyle, regardless of their age, gender or ability.”

“In the last round of funding Bamawm Lockington United Cricket Club (BLUCC) received $1,500 to support a new generation of young girls playing cricket.

“I know how hard our local sporting clubs are working so I encourage them to take BLUCC’s lead and use this opportunity for a grant.”

VicHealth chief executive officer, Jerril Rechter, said with less than a third of Victorians getting enough physical activity to benefit their health, it is critical clubs are supported to offer more opportunities to get people moving.

“Our research shows many Victorians are not fitting the recommended amount of physical activity into their week,” Ms Rechter said.

“Women’s participation in sport is still lower than men’s, and due to many factors, including a lack of time, opportunities and confidence, many women and girls find it hard to get active.”
