Rural Chances Scholarships Now Open
Friday 1st December 2017
Leader of The Nationals and Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh is encouraging young people who are wanting to study at TAFE or undertake an apprenticeship to apply for a new scholarship.
The Rural Chances Scholarships are for young rural Victorians who have career aspirations but are facing significant financial or social challenges in accessing their opportunities.
Mr Walsh said the 2018 Rural Chances scholarships, which are an initiative of the Macpherson Smith Rural Foundation (MSRF), are offering 10 scholarships valued at $5,000 and a further 10 smaller scholarships of up to $2,000.
“Rural students often face much greater barriers to participation in vocational education and training than their metropolitan counterparts,” Mr Walsh said.
“These scholarships can make a huge difference to rural students in terms of assisting with the costs of moving from home or travelling to complete training qualifications, extra support from a mentor, leadership and networking opportunities and purchasing required materials, equipment and books.”
Applicants must be between 16-24 years of age, hold a current Centrelink health care card and be planning to train in an area where there are skill shortages in rural or regional Victoria.
