Leader of The Nationals and Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh has paid his respects to Aboriginal Elder and leader Dr Alf Bamblett.
Mr Walsh attended Uncle Alf’s funeral in Moama today joined by former Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and former Nationals Member for Shepparton Jeanette Powell.
Mr Walsh said Uncle Alf would be remembered as a proud Yorta Yorta Bangerang and Wiradjuri man – a fair and considerate moderator but one who consistently challenged injustice and remained true to his values.
“Uncle Alf was an outstanding leader and tireless advocate for the Aboriginal community over many decades “ Mr Walsh said.
Mr Walsh said Uncle Alf played a significant role in Aboriginal affairs through key policy making and management roles and he was instrumental in shaping many Aboriginal community organisations.
In government the Liberal-Nationals Coalition was proud to name Uncle Alf as one of the first inductees into the Victorian Indigenous Honour Roll.
“I offer Uncle Alf’s family and the Victorian indigenous community my deepest sympathy. His was a strong voice which extended well beyond Victoria “ Mr Walsh said.
