Letter to the Editor (Kangaroo pet food trial must be made permanent)
Friday 23 February 2018
Country jobs hang in the balance because Daniel Andrews refuses to support Victoria’s kangaroo pet food industry.
The current trial ends in March but, despite it proving outstanding success, the Andrews Labor Government remains silent as to the industry’s future.
The Liberal Nationals have committed to making the industry permanent if we are elected in November.
But Daniel Andrews is trying to get cosy with The Greens and putting inner-city votes ahead of common sense and jobs in regional and rural Victoria.
A permanent program would not change the requirement for Authority to Control Wildlife permits to be issued for any kangaroos used as pet food.
The former Liberal Nationals government introduced the program to make use of carcasses that were otherwise being left to rot in paddocks.
Instead, the trial turned this waste into a high protein, popular and affordable pet food product and at the same time created jobs and business expansion in regional Victoria.
If Daniel Andrews refuses to make the program permanent before the current trial ends in March, country jobs will be lost and lawfully culled kangaroo carcasses will once again be left to waste.
Daniel Andrews must follow the Liberal Nationals’ lead and stand up for common sense and country jobs by making the kangaroo pet food program permanent.
