Direct relief next step for Victoria’s dairy farmers
Tuesday 24 May 2016
The following comments are from Peter Walsh, Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Agriculture, in response to today’s announcement of further support for Victoria’s dairy industry.
“Dairy farmers will appreciate the extra support services for their industry and we encourage Government to roll out the programs without delay.
“The next step must be measures that bring immediate relief to hip pockets and the cash flow crunch that’s hurting farm books.
“We strongly encourage the Andrews Government to now work on direct relief measures, like rates rebates and waiver of charges like fixed water cost, which farmers have been raising with us.
“Coalition MPs will pursue these again when we meet with the Agriculture Minister and Department representatives later today.
“Dairy processors must also step up. Murray Goulburn and Fonterra have been missing in action. The processors still have a lot to answer for and they must also do their bit to make sure our dairy farmers get through this crisis.
“The Liberal-Nationals Coalition stands side by side with our dairy farmers and we will support all Federal and State initiatives that offer relief from this current crisis.”
