Swan Hill
At 28,093 square kilometres, the Swan Hill electorate is one of the largest represented in the Victorian Parliament. It extends north from the foothills of the Great Dividing Range with its historic goldmining towns set in box ironbark woodlands, through the irrigated Northern Plains to the River Murray. The river flows through peaceful red gum forests and past productive dairy farms, irrigated wine grapes, orchards of stone fruit, olives, almonds and vegetables.
In the west of the electorate lies the vast, rolling Mallee grain belt dotted with small towns, large silos and pockets of diverse Mallee scrub. The south west corner takes in part of the Wimmera, itself a rich grain, canola and legume growing area. Agriculture and horticulture and their associated food industries and vast service sector are the economic drivers of the Swan Hill electorate.
There are many towns, from small blink-and-you-miss communities with one pub to large, bustling commercial centres. Wherever you visit in the Swan Hill electorate, you will find proud, resilient communities with the strong spirit of the pioneers.
