Local Students Receive Science Scholarships
14 July 201
Leader of The Nationals and Member for Murray Plains Peter Walsh visited MacKillop College today to meet two students whom he has sponsored with science scholarships.
Mr Walsh said he was pleased to assist the students in taking part in such an exciting opportunity.
Jacinta van Roosmalen and Kimberley Archard have accepted placements in the ConocoPhillips Science Experience Program 2015-16, a program which encourages students to consider science, engineering and technology as career choices.
“Young women continue to be under-represented in these professions and I am very pleased to see female students from Swan Hill take up this opportunity” Mr Walsh said.
“The science subjects are universal and know no boundaries and the experience will be invaluable for them.
“It will provide these bright young students with science skills and interests which will stand them in good stead wherever there academic lives lead them,” he said.
The program is aimed at students in Years 9 and 10 and involves hands-on activities as well as interactive lectures from prominent scientists and visits to research and industry sites.
“It is certainly my pleasure to sponsor Jacinta and Kimberley and I hope that the experience lives up to their expectations, and more,” Mr Walsh said.
Kimberley will be attending Swinburne University of Technology in Hawthorn while Jacinta will complete her placement at Federation University Ballarat.
Swan Hill Rotary Rotary Club President Bruce Jones was also present to take part in the presentation to the two students Rotary are supporting, Madeleine Wright and Laura Schammer.
Madeline will be attending Swinburne University of Technology and Laura Schammer will attend Federation University Gippsland.
In wishing all the girls well, Mr Walsh paid tribute to the tremendous work Rotary do in supporting the educational aspirations of thousands of young people.
