Letter to the Editor - Family Violence
27 November 2015
The 2015 Australian of the year, Rosie Batty, addressed a special parliamentary sitting this week to draw attention to the tragedy of family violence in our community.
Her speech and that of several others highlighted that family violence has no geographical boundaries and crosses all parts of society and all income levels in society.
The message that was reinforced is that family violence is a gendered issue. It is about men wanting power over women and particularly their lack of respect for women.
Family violence can be physical, psychological, sexual or financial abuse.
Events associated with White Ribbon Day this week have drawn attention to the fact that silence is no longer acceptable. It is very important for men to speak up. Staying silent makes them as guilty as the perpetrator.
My personal view, and that of The Nationals, is that we look forward to doing whatever we can to make a contribution to stamping out family violence in this state.
